Summer of Love 10 miler by runningwithkel at Garmin Connect - Details
...............................................................................
Well, instead of a 4-letter word for this race I have just a 3-letter....HOT!!!! I really thought that there would be more shade running around the lake, man did I forget how the entire course wasn't along the trees.
Anyway, Scott and I met Jeff and Paul at the race, and it was good to see them again. At the starting line I told myself to take it easy and pace myself...and I didn't really have to pace myself, the heat did it for me. I felt good the first 5 miles as I was around 47 minutes which, I was happy because I was under a 10 minute pace. One thing I did do during each of the two laps around the lake was to walk and get water. Unfortunately the second time around the water stop around mile 6 or 7 did not have anymore water. I couldn't believe it because I really needed some. But, as I made my way in front of the amphitheater I guess I looked like I was going to die and a man who was there for the concert asked me if I wanted a bottle of water. I graciously said yes and thanked him and I ran off. Before drinking the water I made sure the cap was tightly sealed. It was very cold and I drank nearly half of it when this elderly man running near me asked if he could have some. I couldn't say no, so I gave him some. I held on to the water and caught up to him again and told him he could have the rest of it that I was finished. He thanked me. We chatted about how we couldn't believe they ran out of water. Another lady joined in our conversation, (yes we were actually talking about 8 miles into the race)and she was thirsty too, so the elderly man gave the water to her and told her to drink it because she needed to stay hydrated. So, she did. It's amazing what people will do when they are that thirsty.
Made my way to mile 9 where they had some water. It wasn't cold at all, but it was wet and that is all that matters. Finally, I was happy to see Robin Hood Drive, because I new all I had to go was less than a half of a mile...man I was happy! I kept looking at my watch because I wanted to finish around 1:45...but that didn't happen, I managed to get 1:48...so I'll take it, along with my t-shirt, and my 2nd place finish Lava Lamp!!!!!
